Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents,

Welcome back and what a fantastic summer start to the last term of the year. We all love the summer term. The feeling of fresh air, open windows and no jumpers is a real favourite for the children and add sports day and it’s the best.

There is a full calendar for the term and we will be sending dates out informing you of all the events taking place. The first one for the diary is May Day. Please come and join us on the field for a fun day including the traditional may pole dancing. As normal it is on Bank holiday Monday 4th May. I hope you will be able to join us.

This week Miss Cosh worked alongside Julie Paddock (Early Years advisor) to moderate foundation stage pupil work. We continue to find ways to improve our teaching and learning within our school.

Now that the weather has changed please can I remind parents to send sun hat, sun glasses (optional) and sun cream with your child? Even 15 minutes at playtime can be very hot for the children. Water bottles will be important too.

Next week my diary is as followed:

Monday - Payhembury

Tuesday -Awliscombe

Wednesday- Awliscombe

Thursday- Awliscombe

Friday- Payhembury

If you need me please speak to an administrator on either site to book an appointment with me.

A short but sweet newsletter update this week. I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Regards,

Mrs Hammett

Well Done To…..

Willow Class – Reception – Freddy Brauer            Year 1   –   William Brainch

             - Year 2     – Amelia Wadsworth

Ash Class   – Year 3   - Harlan Doble                  Year 4   – Rupert Hammond

Oak Class   - Year 5   - William Bentley               Year 6   - Amelie Wilkinson

Notices to Parents

Letters Sent Home- Clubs letter, confirmation clubs form, Rounders (Oak), Football (Oak), Health screening letters (Reception)

Swimming – Swimming will start again next week. Willow Class will be swimming on a Monday afternoon and Ash and Oak will be swimming on a Wednesday afternoon. Please bring in appropriate swim wear and a towel in a named bag.

Clubs – Clubs start again next week. Please note scratch club (computer programming) is on a Thursday 3.30 – 4.30pm. As spaces are limited children who didn’t take part in the club last time are having the opportunity this time.

Heather Little has just informed us that she will be running a sports club on Thursday after school, 3.30 – 4.30pm. This is open to all KS1 and KS2 children. If your child would like to take part please let the office know and we will send a form home with you for you to sign.

Contact Information - It is very important that we have the correct contact details for all parents in case of emergency. Please can we also ensure we have the correct mobile numbers for our text messaging service, this is a vital way that we send out reminders and information about clubs, events, trips (anticipated return to school times) and short notice changes. If you want to check which numbers we hold for you, please pop into the office. Thank you.

Collection of Children from School – Increasingly we are having more children informing the class teacher or school office if they are going home with someone other than the usual people. As previously requested, please could the parents advise us directly. Not that we don’t trust what the children are telling us but to ensure the safeguarding of the child we will only release a child if the parent has advised us.

Absence from School – Please could we remind parents that if your child has a medical appointment, they need to provide the school with a copy of the appointment letter. Also you must inform the school office of any other appointments (preferably in writing or by email). Telling the class teacher at the beginning or end of a school day is not always the best way as it’s such a busy time.

School Meals – The new system is bedding in well, however, there has been a couple of teething problems. If your child is not in school at the beginning of a day due to an appointment, please could you ensure you have informed the school office by phone or email of your child’s choices. If we do not hear from you and your child is absent we will assume they do not require a school meal for that day. The school office has to ring through to the kitchen to order the meals by 9.15am. Thank you for you help.

Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents,

What an exciting start to the day with the partial eclipse, a fantastic whole class learning experience. The cloud cover did not mean that we fully appreciated the darkening skies but the temperature definitely dropped and the birds all went off to roost. Technology allowed us to view the total eclipse from Svalbard

It has been lovely to be able to pass you the reports from both Ofsted and SIAMS this week. These both reflect how amazing our children are. Please do come along to our Cheese and Wine evening on Thursday to discuss these inspections in more detail, there is a letter with more details about this to follow.

Tomorrow we have a group of children taking part in the Rock Stars, RockSolid Race at Escot. They run at 12.00 if anyone would like to come and cheer us on. Mrs Morris will be running with the children, please do try to make sure that she can keep up with you !! Spectators are free but it does cost £5 for car parking.

Another date for your diary – it is our Easter service on Friday at 9.15am. Please do come along to support us. Ash class will be leading this.

It wasn’t so much red nose day as red face day this week as children completed their 20minute run. Everyone did really well to persevere with the running, their mark has been left with a track ! For those of you interested Killerton hold a 5km run each Saturday where children can run with parents, there is no cost for this but you do need to register before so that you have a bar code to take with you.

Kate Howell has been with our Year 5 as part of the Bikeability training. Children have completed their level 1 and 2 which involves cycling on the road. Children do need to be reminded that they should remember all that they have been taught and should follow this at all times not just in the training with Kate.

We are going to make a few changes to our lunch ordering system after Easter, please do look out for a letter next week.

Have a lovely weekend,

With regards, Penny Hammett

News From Payhembury Church

Governors News - Federation

Parents will be aware that the governing bodies of Awliscombe and Payhembury Primary Schools have been talking about developing our Management Partnership into a full Federation. That is, a closer collaboration in which a single governing body oversees both schools in place of the existing separate sets of governors. It is a step that can bring a lot of benefits, particularly to small village schools like ours.

Governors from both schools recently met for a day, facilitated by advisors from the Local Authority and the Diocese, who have years of experience of bringing federations into the world.  We discussed the benefits of federation and the process required to get there, which is set out in law. There was a strong feeling that this was the right step for both schools, and both sets of governors have now resolved to proceed to the consultation stage.  The consultation is a formal process in which information about the proposed federation is sent to parents, staff and other stakeholders within our respective communities, who then have a six week period in which to express their views on the proposals. At the end of the consultation period, both governing bodies decide, taking those views into account, whether or not to enter into the federation.

In our case, the consultation will begin in May and run until late June. If agreed, the federation would then start at the beginning of September.

It is very important that everyone involved with either school fully understands what federation entails. If you have questions, there is no need to wait until the consultation begins: do speak to Mrs Hammett or any governor at either school. We may not have all the answers at this stage, but the sooner we are aware of concerns, the easier it will be to address them in the formal proposals.

Payhembury Youth Club needs you!

Youth Club continues to attract lots of children each week, to both our junior and senior sessions, but we need some help!

We are looking for:

  • More volunteers who would be willing to join our rota to run the sessions (term time Mondays: juniors 5:30-7, seniors 7-8:30, plus some setting up and clearing up times either end). You don’t need to make a massive commitment, but we would like to be able to have a bigger rota of people to cover the sessions. Note this is on an unpaid voluntary basis.
  • A new young play leader to help cover our senior session (paid £7.50 an hour) – ideal job for someone in Yr 12/13
  • A lockable filing cabinet
  • Any equipment you have in your garages/lofts which is gathering dust that you think youth club could make use of – some of our equipment is getting a bit tired!
  • Musicians who would like to play a slot at Payhembury’s Party in the Park, Saturday 4 July

Please contact us if you can help with any of these things at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
