NEWS FROM ESCOT
What a wet Easter! I joined a small band of people from Feniton in the Walk of Witness from Feniton Spa to the church. The rain was unrelenting and we were all very wet by the time we reached Feniton Church. Tea and a hot cross bun were very welcome. Due to the very wet ground we abandoned
going up the hill in Feniton for our Easter Day sunrise service but a good crowd collected in the churchyard round the fire pit so we still managed to celebrate Christ’s resurrection outside early in the morning. We had a good congregation at Escot for our Easter communion also.
We held our first whist drive on Easter Monday when over 80 people enjoyed whist and tea in spite of the dreary weather. As always we are most grateful to Les and Jackie Peek, their family and friends for organising such an enjoyable fund-raiser, and giving us over £370.
Our patron saints, St Philip and St James, are celebrated on May 1st which is also the anniversary of our dedication in 1840. This year our patronal festival is on May 6th when we will be joined by congregations from Feniton and Payhembury. As Easter was early this year, Ascension Day, the day when Jesus rose to heaven, is celebrated the same week on Thursday May 10th when we are having a service at Feniton. Details of these and all our other services are in the middle pages of the magazine.
We are now getting prepared for the Quilt and Flower Festival taking place on 8th, 9th and 10th June. As I said last month if you are a quilter and would like to display a quilt please will you contact Lindsay Saunders on 812962 who is co-ordinating the display. Olive is organising the flowers so I’m sure both quilts and flowers will be spectacular. We will be open all three days from 10am – 5pm with refreshments all day, coffee in the morning, light snacks at lunchtime and cream teas and cakes in the afternoon served in our refreshment tent. Surely by then we shall be having warm and sunny weather so it will be a pleasure to relax and enjoy a leisurely visit here. We look forward to welcoming you.
