NEWS FROM ESCOT

Firstly, an apology. In last month’s magazine for some reason I managed to move the Harvest Supper forward by a month which caused considerable confusion! It is actually on Friday 25th October at 7.30pm in Escot Village Hall. We have managed to retain the cost at £10 to include a three course meal and your first drink so I do

hope we will see many of you there. It always proves to be a very cheerful evening with good food and company. Before that we have our Harvest Festival evening worship on Sunday 6th October at 6pm, followed by refreshments in church. As for the last few years, we are collecting non-perishable goods which we can then take to Ottery food bank. They are always most grateful to receive anything we send so, if you can, please do bring something. I have been busy this summer updating the information on registers that Jim Pearcy put together for us. Having only had to collate information for the last six years I am even more aware of the huge amount of time and effort he put in. We are so very fortunate to have this done with all the alphabetical cross-checks so that we can look up information very easily. I am quite frequently contacted by people whose forebears lived at Escot and it is great to be able to pass on information about their baptisms, marriages and deaths – and if we are lucky, where they are buried in the churchyard. I have also collected all the old registers, minutes books etc, some of whom were deteriorating from damp in the church safe and others stored in different places; with the agreement of the PCC I am going to take them all to the Devon Records Office where they will be looked after in the right conditions and so preserved for posterity. October is of course the month when we start our soup lunch season, advertised elsewhere in the magazine, and we look forward to seeing you there. Judy Davis 812739
